I had a fun day shooting some hockey today. I was strobeless in the arena, but still got a lot a great shots (about 285, give or take). I shoot with a 80-200 mm 2.8 lens and a D700 to compensate for the low light and high speed of the game.
As we enter the last week of January, our thoughts have turned from Christmas to Valentine’s Day. At YT Photography, we believe memories are for sharing. That is why we are offering a special Valentine’s Day photo package. For $35, we will take your child’s picture and provide them with twenty-four custom Valentine’s. The most common question I hear when preparing for photos is “what should we wear?” For years, I personally did the matchy-matchy route, with every child wearing the same outfit. That, however, began to get harder and harder to do once my children’s size ranges spread out and I got a combination of boys and girls. Another solution is to do solid matching, where everyone usually wears a white or black shirt. This can be boring, especially if year after year you choose the same colour. Solution three is to stay in the same or complimentary colour range. I have moved to embrace this style and have found that it is actually easy to do. Most stores use similar or complementary colours across their collections, so even if the outfit are not the same, they will look great together. If you shop at a store like Old Navy, with clothes for every age group, even Mom and Dad can get in on the fun. This way you get fun, stylish clothes that co-ordinate without wearing the exact same thing.
Connor came over for a shoot this week and he brought with him his favourite guitar. He has his own style and an awesome confidence that shows in his photos. We are planning a future shoot with his entire band in the spring. I can’t hardly wait.
I had a busy Thursday with the Brauns, taking individual portraits of four of their children. Not satisfied with the “back to school photos” offered in September, they came in to get some portraits that they would love to share with the extended family. For a family shoot, each child receives about 20 photos to choose from. I love photographing this family because their older girls are so beautiful and the younger siblings are crazy fun to photograph. In their digital negatives, I included several shots of the youngest Braun toddling in the background because it was so terribly cute.
The hottest trend in Wedding Photography is Photo Booths. If you are not familiar with them, they are special areas set up at the reception where guests can have their pictures taken. At YT Photos, we have our own special twist on the Photo Booth. We offer a full time attendant who takes the pictures and get the great shots and smiles, and we print off the best four images onto a 4×6 card the guests can keep as a memento of the day. We have a sub-dye printer which spits out prints in under 15 seconds, so guests get their pictures immediately. Packages start at $500 for three hours of unlimited photographs and prints plus a full time attendant, Brides are also able to buy disks of all the images, or get a hard cover photo book of the fun the guests had.
Even if YT Photos is not your wedding portrait photographer, you can still have our photo booth at your reception. Of course, if you want, we would be more than happy to include a photo booth at a special rate when you hire us as your wedding photographer.
It has been ridiculously warm this winter. I was able to shoot outside all November and December. Even the first week of January saw above zero temperatures. So the first shoot of the new year took place outside at a new spot I found near Steinbach.
Winter came back with a vengence today, but with the cold came a rare and beautiful sight. I was able to run outside in between a shoot to take this picture before it disappeared.
Cake Smashes are a great way to celebrate Baby’s first birthday. The idea is simple: we place Baby in front of a yummy birthday cake and let her do whatever she wants. The expressions are priceless and make great images for sharing with relatives. I love photographing Cake Smashes because they represent a time when everything is still new and amazing, even cake. So give me a call if you would like to set time for your baby’s own Cake Smash.
The new site is up and almost running. The proofing gallery is still available but all the old blog posts are gone. Don’t worry, I will up updating this new site with previews from shoots, upcoming specials and general information on YT Photography.
